Best of 2017 Private Label Movement Podcasts

It’s been a great year at Private Label Movement. We’re winding down the last two weeks of 2017 with some of the best guests with amazing insights for growing your business in 2018!

Focus on Culture and the Influencers

Today, we are featuring the episodes we had with two successful sellers Kevin Pasco and Brian Burt. Kevin finds his satisfaction from having the best team. Brian, on the other hand, achieved success through his partnerships with influencers for his product.

Hiring a Culture of Success

According to Kevin Pasco, hiring a culture is one of the best things they’ve done. They attracted people from Fortune 500 companies to work with them.

“Sometimes you have to step back, realize it’s the wrong decision and scrap it.” – Kevin Pasco on business focus

Kevin learned a lot from the Silicon Valley. He shares that the great thing about what they are doing is it allows them to learn for free from the big companies.

Winning with Influencers

Brian Burt leveraged influencer marketing for their product. They were selling selfie sticks. For that, they reached out to about a dozen influencers.

“The key to Amazon success in today’s market is external influencers.” – Brian Burt

About 5 of 6 of the influencers agreed. They did it without any fees. With the increase in conversions, Brian also saw an increase in rankings.

Coupon Update 264

Amazon Coupon Update

Kevin is back with his Amazon seller coupon update. What are the things he observed and how can you set up one for your products? Tune in!

“I really love this new coupon feature from Amazon.” – Kevin Rizer

Coupon Feature for Sellers

Amazon coupons have been out for a long time already. It is a feature that is available to most sellers on Amazon.

Before, only vendors and Amazon may use them. Now, third-party sellers may also use them to improve their brands and sales.

Things to Love About the Coupons

Kevin tested it on his products, both on the new ones and on those that have been performing well for a while. He loves the Amazon coupons for a couple of reasons.

“There is a lot of truth to the fact that consumers … when they see that something is on sale, they are more likely to buy.” – Kevin Rizer

One of the things he loves about it is east convenience in setting up. It only takes about 2 to 3 minutes. It is also a powerful feature that sellers may consider for their brands.

Cost of Amazon Coupons

The Amazon coupons feature is also affordable. Other ways of increasing sales like Facebook Ads and AdWords can be time-consuming and costly.

“While there are fees associated with coupons, they are very nominal.” – Kevin Rizer

How much does this feature cost? You only pay whatever the discount plus 60 cents per coupon redeemed. That is less than the other ways of increasing sales.

Best of 2017 Private Label Movement Podcasts

It’s been a great year at Private Label Movement. We’re winding down the last two weeks of 2017 with some of the best information from our guests.

“I wanted to take a look back and bring you some of my favorite moments, favorite episodes from the year.” – Kevin Rizer introducing Parts 1 and 2 of the Best of 2017 Private Label Movement Podcasts

Popular Topics in the Industry

Two of the popular topics in e-commerce take the center stage for today’s episode. They are Amazon reimbursements and intellectual property. Featured guests are Karen Ellenberger and Maria Speth.

On Amazon Reimbursements

Karen Ellenberger started during the early days of Amazon. She analyzes data to help other sellers primarily with optimal reimbursement management.

“There is no better place to launch a business with very little resources (than Amazon).” – Karen Ellenberger

According to her, the total size depends on the seller’s account. There are things that impact the loss of damaged items. Among which is the category of the item being sold.

On Brand Registry and Trademark

Maria Speth is a trademark attorney. She specializes in intellectual property for online sellers.

“Litigation is ugly, it’s expensive. It’s not where you want to be.” – Maria Speth on the power of prevention

According to Maria, a seller should think about intellectual property right from the start. The earlier it is done, the better. This is because litigation isn’t just expensive; it also takes away time from your business.

Time to Reconsider Seller Fulfilled Prime? 262

Time to Reconsider Seller Fulfilled Prime?

It has been more than a year already since the release of Amazon Prime. What’s in it for you? Here are some quick insights on what it is and how it works, because it just might be the perfect time to reconsider Seller Fulfilled Prime. Tune in!

“Last week, Amazon announced a limited time promotion that reduces the referral fee for items that you enable for seller fulfilled Prime.” – Kevin Rizer

What is Amazon Prime?

Amazon Prime is a program that enables sellers to send orders directly to their customers. They do not need to send them to the company’s fulfillment center.

Popularity and Perks of Prime Orders

Back then, direct fulfillment was only available through Merchant Fulfilled Network. Now, 70% are Prime orders.

“Amazon wanted to have more of those items eligible for Prime and the way they’ve done that is through Seller Fulfilled Prime.” – Kevin Rizer

Not many sellers send items via Amazon fulfillment center because of weight, value, and purpose. Those ineligible for Prime orders do not enjoy advantages like easier returns and free shipping.

Requirements for Seller Fulfilled Prime

Should you want to join the program, you need to adhere to the standards set by Amazon for Prime orders. Sellers cannot just ship items anytime they want.

“Amazon requires that 100% of your orders are sent via 2-day delivery that are designated as Prime orders.” – Kevin Rizer

One requirement is to ship items within two days. It could present some difficulty for a variety of reasons. There are other requirements in the list.

To find out more about the program and how it works, download and listen to Time to Reconsider Seller Fulfilled Prime.

Into Systems and Processes

Josh’s interest in systems started about 7 years ago. He had his own consulting business. But, he wanted to achieve something that would last.

Winning the buy box 260

Winning the Buy Box

How are you winning the sales on Amazon? Winning the buy box might be just what you need. Listen to Kevin as he explains what it is, its importance, and how you can work your way around it!

“Even if you are private labeling — even if you are the only seller of a product — it’s important to understand how Amazon calculates this buy box.” – Kevin Rizer

What is the buy box?

The buy box is important to sellers. It is an algorithm that Amazon uses to determine which seller is on the product detail page.

“Whichever seller is attached is winning the buy box.” – Kevin Rizer

When talking about it, however, remember that Amazon was designed for sellers to compete on price and sell the same product.

Factor #1: Item Price

There is no specific formula to win the buy box. But there are factors that Kevin discovered through testing and experimentation. One factor is the item price.

“Amazon loves to offer their customers the lowest price on items.” – Kevin Rizer

Oftentimes, sellers with the lowest price win. It comes with other considerations like seller ratings or feedback. With a good feedback, sellers have a higher chance of winning the buy box.

Factor #2: Length of Time

Another factor in winning the buy box is the length of time that a seller has been selling on Amazon. The more time you’ve spent selling, the more feedback you must have received.

But, it is not always the case. It takes time and patience for sellers to gain credibility.

Brad Stone Amazon’s Unconventional Success Then and Now 259

Brad Stone Amazon’s Unconventional Success Then and Now

Brad Stone is the author of The Everything Store, a book about the early days of Amazon. Brad offers amazing insights into the unconventional success of Amazon then and now.

“There are parts of the company, probably where Jeff Bezos is paying the most attention, where nobody is sleeping and they are crying and they’re very stressed out.” – Brad Stone on the culture of Amazon

Writing about Amazon

Before The Everything Store was first published in 2013, Brad was a beat reporter for The New York Times. Part of his beat was Amazon, which rose to fame just around 2008.

His colleagues already had books written about Google, Facebook, and other giants online. But none wrote about Amazon. That inspired him to write about the company’s unconventional success.

Start of the Process

Because of his work, Brad was able to establish a good relationship with Amazon. As a way of introducing the book to them, he wrote a press release.

“Amazon needed to create a tighter bond with its customers and that’s what Amazon Prime gave them.” – Brad Stone

During that time, Amazon was piquing the interest of the community. It was in 2011 when Brad got the contract to write the book.

Story of The Everything Store

Brad had no idea how good of a story it was. He wanted to start with Jeff Bezos as the youngest Vice President at a Wall Street company.

“Companies are partnering to counter the threat that is Amazon.” – Brad Stone

But as the story progressed, he found so many other things that happened at the same time. Not to mention, Jeff also had a very interesting personal story. The Everything Store is actually about a vision he had while working at a firm in Wall Street.
